Today's students are living in a digital world. They need to be able to use technology to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others. You will learn how to use Google Drive, Wikispaces, Glogster, Photostory, and Audacity to accomplish this goal in a way that is fun and engaging for students. This PD is intended for teachers of grade levels 4-12+, but may adapted for younger students.

8:30 Welcome to Digital Writing!
  • Please create a google account (if you don't already have one).
  • Sign in to your google account and click on Drive.
  • Create a wikispaces account (if you don't already have one).
  • Write your name, gmail address, and wikispaces username on a post-it for us.

Whole-Group Collaboration: Brainstorming Sensory Phrases
*Assume students have studied sensory language in mentor texts prior to this activity. (sample mentor text: "You Can't Write a Poem about McDonald's" by Ronald Wallace) They are now preparing to write a poem of their own.
  • Click on shared with me (left side under My Drive) and open the document titled Brainstorming Sensory Phrases. Follow directions.

Producing writing using technology:
  • Create a document and compose your poem. (Example poem)
  • *Write along with students.

Interacting with others:
  • Share your poem with 2 others and work as a writing group to give feedback by inserting comments.

Publish to a global audience:
  • Publish your poem to this wiki page: Our Writing (Instructions below)
  • Click on share. Change from private to public on the web. Click save.
  • Right click on link to share and copy the link. Click done.
  • Click on the Our Writing link above. Click on your name. Click the edit button.
  • Type your poem title. Click and drag over title to highlight it. Click the insert link button.
  • Click web address. Click new window. Paste link into address box. Click add link.
  • Click save.

Implementation Ideas? (Including presentations, spreadsheets, forms, drawings)
  • students collaborate on a class newspaper about the Revolutionary War
  • kids research, then create a google presentation, then publish to their wiki
  • kids create a google drawing - a flow map showing the main events of their personal narrative


9:30 Digital Stories
  • Fortunately by Remy Charlip
  • Choose a partner (someone who is NOT sitting right next to you). Decide which one of you will click here to open a storyboard template, choose File - make a copy, rename the document, then share the document with the other partner.
  • Together, each on your own computers, write your story and take notes in the illustration column about what the picture will look like.
  • Use the chat box to discuss ideas while creating the story.
  • Move to one person's computer and use Paint to create your illustrations.
  • Use Photostory 3 to create your digital story.
  • Publish to your wiki page.
